Why the UK, now: what Indian graduates should know in 2026

Three years ago, the question in most Indian homes was "US or Canada?" In 2026, the better question is different: which country's rules will still look the same on the day you graduate? For most graduates we work with, that answer points to the United Kingdom. It has weak spots too, and we cover them below.

The map moved while you were deciding

Between 2024 and 2026, every major English-speaking destination changed its rules for students. They did it in different ways.

The UK tightened too. The difference is the kind of change. Canada and Australia now cap how many students they let in. The US has added checks and costs at each stage, from the visa interview to the first job. The UK has no cap on international student numbers, and its big changes were announced months in advance, with dates you can plan around.

One year instead of two

A UK taught master's usually takes 12 months. In the US, Canada and Australia most take two years. The shorter course means one year of fees instead of two, one year of rent, and an earlier start to your working life.

The two tabs tell different stories. On the time and cost of finishing a degree, the UK leads. On work time after graduation, Canada and US STEM graduates get more. Canada offers more post-study time, if you can get one of its capped places. A STEM graduate in the US gets more, if the new admission rules and the H-1B fee don't get in the way. The UK's 18 months is shorter, but it is written into law with a start date, and you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa as soon as an employer sponsors you.

Your English is already your advantage

Across Europe, the language question decides more careers than the degree does. In Germany, most jobs outside Berlin's tech scene expect B2-level German. France, Italy and Poland work much the same way. Ireland is the one other English-speaking option in the EU, and we handle it too, but its job market serves about 5 million people against the UK's 69 million.

In the UK, your lectures, your part-time job, your interviews and your first contract are all in English. The months you'd spend learning German become months spent on your CV.

It also means the preparation you do for IELTS or PTE isn't a hurdle you forget after the visa. Writing clearly, speaking under time pressure and understanding fast academic English are the same skills UK recruiters test in assessment centres.

Where the jobs are, and what they pay

After the Graduate route, most people who stay switch to a Skilled Worker visa. Since July 2025, sponsored jobs generally have to be graduate-level roles, the kind a UK master's prepares you for. The general salary floor is £41,700, but if you switch from a Student or Graduate visa you can usually be paid a lower new-entrant rate, from £33,400.

While you study, you can work up to 20 hours a week in term time. At the National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21 and over, that's useful support. It won't pay for your degree, so don't build your budget around it.

The UK-India trade agreement, in force since July 2026, cuts tariffs on almost all trade between the two countries. For graduates who understand both markets, that means more employers who need exactly that. Nine UK universities are also opening campuses in India, including Southampton in Gurugram and Liverpool in Bengaluru.

Whoever you are, the track is yours

No subject in the UK is "for women" or "for men". The UK's Equality Act 2010 protects students and workers from discrimination, including because of sex, pregnancy or marriage. Here is what matters most for different readers.

The costs, in plain numbers

For a UK Student visa you show your course fees for the first year, plus living costs of £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months. The visa fee is £558, and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 a year, which gives you access to the NHS. Our UK Student visa checklist walks through every document.

One thing on the horizon: from August 2028 the government plans a £925 levy on English universities for each international student. It is paid by universities, but it may nudge fees up. It's one more reason not to wait.

So, is the UK right for you?

If you want a respected degree in one year, a job market that works in your language, and rules you can plan around, the UK deserves to be first on your list. If your family needs to travel with you, or your goal is a quick route to settlement, it may not be. Either way, you should decide with the full picture.
